Vive la France!

Next

From la 'Belle Époque' to World War II, France, and Paris in particular, was a magnet for artists of all kinds. Musicians, painters dancers, and writers from far and wide came to soak up the culture and be part of this creative period. Artists such as Maurice Ravel and Darius Milhaud, along with others, worked in new musical idioms that broke ties with the past. The American composer George Gershwin was also attracted to Paris, where he soaked up the energy and later blended it into his Jazz-infused style.

The post-World War I period had its own popular musical champions that represented new ways of thinking in new venues and using the new recording techniques. The celebrated singer, Édith Piaf, emerged as the voice of the times being one of the world’s most popular entertainers from the 1940s to the 1960s.

Help us celebrate the music of France with special guest Karine Basque with the songs of Édith Piaf.
