The lives of Kings and Queens and other nobility and gentry have long been inspiration for composers. Whether the work be commissioned by a notable individual or written in the hope of gaining favour from a possible future patron, there are many orchestral works that owe their instigation to the ruling classes.
This program selects from such works written over the course of 250 years.
